This is totally abnormal - created by overstocking fry from fish hatcheries...and its killing our seals, seabirds, whales, and other kinds of fish. Thousands of Murres are showing up dead on the coasts because of this pillaging. This is a great example of the colonizing takeover of Alaska from people who only care about money. There is NOTHING sustainable about tihs...its all just greed, and most of these boats are run by people who live outside of Alaska, so essentially Alaska is just a colony for a few to get rich on. Makes me sick!

@@eroesel My family moved to Alaska in 1964. And I am highly informed on conservation issues in Alaska. I also have gill-netted in my past, and have a lot of fisher friends. Those who fish wild stocks, hate what the hatcheries have done. Those of us who came up before the takeover of the oil industry and outside corporate fishing industry, have broken hearts and are angry. (Of course, this 'colonial' treatment started with the gold rush and then the 'shoot everything that moves' idiots who used Alaskan animals to fuel an industrial level harvest of animals for shipment outside, thus the loss of Kenai caribou, bear, wolves in the 50s, complete extirpation of animals anywhere people lived essentially). So, yeah, long history in and learning about the abuses of my state and peoples (native, and non-native). If I had a vote, I'd kick all but those who really love the state, all the oil people, all the industrial fishers, all the part-timers out. Most people move somewhere because they love the place. People move to AK for a 'check'. You look at a video like this, and if your primary purpose in life is to 'get everything you can' with little knowledge or concern about the future productivity of a place (for creatures other than hatchery salmon), or whether what is happening is ecologically wise, then you will see 'good' in it. But if one learns just a tad bit more about how ecological systems work, how hard it is on other species, then you will see sadness in the video. In the Kachemak Bay in the late 60s and into the 70s, one could nearly walk across the bay on all the crab pot and shrimp pots floats. After 40 years, they just now opened a personal fishery again on crab. Also in that time period, there was a ton of seabirds (the canary in the coal mine), they are indicators of health of forage fish in a marine ecosystem. Visit now, you are lucky to see any. Sad thing is that hatchery pink fry are not fatty enough to replace the native forage fishes for animals. In fact, the loss of other forage fish fry (because the pinks eat them all), is one reason we are losing seals, seabirds, and other types of fish. @@eroesel I hear that. In the 70s I had friends and family that could no longer fish, or moved, due to the collapse of the crab, shrimp, and herring fisheries in Kachemak Bay. That was before hatcheries really got going hard in PWS and the Cook Inlet region. Herring are just now coming back. For the Southeast, there's a reason that the whales are lining up near the hatcheries and the pinks and other salmon runs are diminishing - its loss of forage fish on a global and regional scale. Whales would way prefer to eat herring then pinks. We are facing global issues on a personal level now. Sadly, what happened to us was due to agency management (or lack thereof), simply refusing to set restrictions and allowing depletion. If Alaska is to save its marine system, changes will have to come. Acidification of the oceans alone will bring harsh realities to bear soon. Have a back up plan, that was my takeaway from what happened to us. Make educational preparations so that you can continue when the fishing is down.

Killing seals? Overstocking? Seals are overpopulated. I've been to this crawfish inlet south of Sitka. I've fished there. This hatchery fishery is chum salmon. This particular fish is used mainly for animal feed and fertilizer. Educate your self.

I saw you guys while we were on the way, power trolling is the most fun fishery I have been in, it looked like such a blast over there. Seine paychecks are nice though. I heard everyone complaining about jellyfish, and i was freshly back from seining PWS and it was nothing compared to up there.
